Measuring microplastic pollution in our marine environment with micro-spectroscopy

Congratulations to Sergio Catalán-Torralbo for his succesful final degree research project with us on micro-Raman analysis and compositional identification of microplastics from sea urchins.

The work has been published in Marine Pollution Bulletin: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.2021.113174

This fundamental work has allowed us to learn the difficulties in measuring microplastics by micro-Raman, a technique which could be key to characterize the pollution by microplastics of our seas and oceans.

We have gained key knowledge on the many tricks to measure micro-Raman spectra of this tiny plastic particles with usual cross-sections of just 20 micrometers, non-planar shapes, and auto-fluorescence, which make them extremelly difficult to be measured with this microspectroscopic technique.
